As a garden designer and landscape gardener, Kay Galvan has completed a wide variety of projects on Colorado's eastern slope, ranging from tiny plantings in rock alpine gardens and garden railways to large installations on residential properties and acreages. Her style favors the naturalistic; although plantings are suited to their owners' tastes and maintenance styles. Unique, yet reliable plant choices coupled with architectural and textural interest are the basis for Galvan's designs. A fairly dry climate, wind, hail, and temperature fluctuations are the driving force behind her garden construction and plant preferences.

Galvan earned a master's degree in fine arts and continues to create drawings and paintings which explore the idea of landscape as it is filtered through the mind. The work focuses on unfilled space, a space which is integral in garden planning, in defining landscape, and in exploring mindscape.
